MRI technologists operate magnetic resonance imaging scanners, which use a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not ionizing radiation — to produce detailed images of soft tissue. The work involves choosing and running pulse sequences, positioning coils and patients, and administering gadolinium-based contrast when it is ordered.

The MRI magnet is always on, so safety screening is a core, non-negotiable duty. Technologists screen patients, staff, and belongings for ferromagnetic hazards and implanted devices, and they enforce the zoned access model that keeps the magnet room controlled.
Careful implant and device screening — and knowing when an item is unsafe or requires special handling — is one of the most important responsibilities an MRI technologist carries.
MRI roles commonly expect ARRT certification with the MR credential (often built on primary ARRT(R)), or an equivalent pathway such as ARMRIT, plus any state license that applies and current BLS. MRI technologists work in hospitals and freestanding outpatient MRI centers, across day, evening, and weekend shifts, and many openings are travel or contract assignments.
